Tornadoes of South Dorset - Round Two 2013

After travelling to Bristol for round 1 of the Arena League, Tornadoes of South Dorset had a much shorter trip for round 2 after being drawn to swim at Dorchester Leisure Centre. With a superb first round performance behind them there was a great spirit amongst the young team from Portland and an eagerness for a repeat of the form they showed in Bristol.

The Tornadoes took an early lead in the evenings proceedings securing their first race win in event three, the girls 11 and under freestyle relay. The 11 and under girls went on to dominate the events in their age group as Bethany Firth, Abigail Barnes, Tabitha Samouelle and Jessica Gale also won the medley relay. In the individual races Jessica Gale won the 50m backstroke, Abigail Barnes won the 50m butterfly, Tabitha Samouelle won the 50m breaststroke and Bethany Firth was second in the 50m freestyle. The 13 and boys, Josh Rowe, Joshua Frampton, Oliver Mills and Henry Wyril were also in superb form also winning both of their relays and securing two wins (Joshua Frampton in the 100m butterfly and freestyle) and second places in the 100m backstroke (Josh Rowe) and 100m breaststroke (Oliver Mills).

With three more wins in the first ten events from the girls 13 and under medley relay team of Eve Hewett, Abigail Hamilton, Chloe Perkins and Freya Stanger, the boys 13 and under medley relay team of Joshua Rowe, Oliver Mills, Joshua Frampton and Henry Wyril and the ladies open medley relay team of Jenny Scott, Rebecca Beal, Eleanor Harvey and Bethan Whittall this meant that Tornadoes had a narrow two point lead over both Frome and Soundwell “B” swimming clubs.

First places continued to be won over the next eight races with Jessica Gales backstroke victory and wins in both the ladies and mens open 100m butterfly for Eleanor Harvey and Niall Laming respectively. With Frome starting to put in some good swims this meant that the lead for Tornadoes had been reduced to just one point.

Two wins in the next eight races by Abigail Barnes in the 50m butterfly and Jenny Scott in the 100m backstroke were backed up by 2 second and 2 third places to stretch the lead for the Osprey based squad to five points and this seemed to give the swimmers the confidence to push for a team win on the night.

From the next 24 races there were sixteen top three finishes with ten of these being race wins. The first places were for Tabitha Samouelle in the 50m breaststroke, Joshua Frampton in the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle, Rebecca Beal in the open 100m breaststroke, Freya Stanger in the 13 and under 100m freestyle, Jenny Scott in the open 100m freestyle, the girls 11 and under medley relay, the girls 13 and under freestyle relay (Eve Hewett, Chloe Perkins, Freya Stanger and Eleanor Smith), the boys 13 and under freestyle relay and the ladies open freestyle relay (Jenny Scott, Kirsty Holmes, Lily Young, Rebecca Beal, Bethan Whittall and Eleanor Harvey).

With such a strong finish it meant that the Tornadoes had won by 22 points from Frome with Soundwell “B” in third place only one point behind Frome. The result has placed them in fourth place in the league after two rounds and means they will compete in the A final in round three hoping to gain promotion to League One next season.

Lead Coach Chris Beal was extremely pleased with his team saying “This was a must win night, and the swimmers worked so hard to earn this result, the A final is their reward, and this will be this team`s biggest test yet". There were 34 personal best times swum by the following swimmers
