Tough start for Promoted Newbury in the 2014 National Arena Swimming League


Saturday night saw Newbury District head off to the Crook Log Pool in Bexley for the first round gala of their 2014 National Arena Swimming League campaign.

Having achieved promotion at the end of last year to the Premier Division of the Southern league, they were competing against strong teams from Windsor, Beckenham, Bromley, Sevenoaks and Wycombe. The Newbury squad put in a spirited challenge throughout the evening, but finished in sixth place overall on 199 points with Beckenham SC running out the overall winners amassing 209 points.

There were a number of very good performances by Newbury swimmers, with Senior Club Captain James McFadzen (15) winning the Men’s Open 200m Individual Medley and taking second place in both 100m Backstroke and Butterfly in the 14/15 yrs age group. Senior Ladies Club Captain, Zara Ryan (16), took second place in the Ladies 100m Breaststroke and third in both the 200m Individual Medley and the 100m Butterfly.

12 year old Ellie Cowan came home first in the 12/13 yrs 100m Breaststroke and took third in the same event in the 14/15 yrs age group. She completed her hat-trick of placings with a second in the 12/13 yrs 100m Backstroke.
Also in the 12/13 yrs age group, Molly Dummett secured third place in both the100m Backstroke and Freestyle, while Millie Pope (13) took a good second place in the girls 100m Butterfly in the 14/15 yrs age group.

The girls 12/13 years team of Avani Gill, Ellie Cowan, Ruth Wyatt and Molly Dummett took second place in the Medley and third in the Freestyle relays.

In the 14/15 years boys Medley relay the team of Joe Seward, Ben Hutchins, Ryan Sitton and James McFadzen took third place.

The next round of the league will take place on Saturday 8th November.
