Best ever result for Teddington in National Arena Swimming League

Teddington Swimming Club showed that talent is not the preserve of big clubs when it took a thrilling overall fourth place in the London Premier Division of the National Arena Swimming League on Saturday 14th December. For the third year running, Teddington made it through to the ‘A’ final which took place this year at Basildon Sporting Village.
Small though Teddington may be, its swimmers have big hearts and produced some epic performances whilst taking on some of the region’s biggest clubs. With a young squad, undaunted by the occasion, the team battled for every point and finished a creditable fifth on the night, and fourth in the final league standings. This is a best ever result for Teddington, who end the season just  behind third placed Ealing, Ipswich (2nd) and overall league winners Hatfield.

Teddington bagged twenty top three places on the night; eight first, six second and six third places.

Winning maximum points and dominating their individual events by a clear winning margin were Anna Smail (11yrs) in the 50m freestyle (30.05), Sophie Fussell (11yrs) in the 50m breaststroke (36.88) and Brandon Sayers (15yrs) in the 100m breaststroke (1 min 10.56).

Teddington youngsters Anna Smail and Sophie Fussell teamed up with Jessica Mayer (10yrs) and Amelia Mackie (11yrs) to produce some impressive winning performances in the Girls’ 9-11yrs 4x50m freestyle relay (2.08.06) and the Girls’ 9-11yrs 4x50m medley relay. Adding to the excitement there were three further winning relay displays. Racing to victory were the Girls’ 13&U 4x50m medley team of Alice Smail (13yrs), Alice Patterson (13yrs), Thalia Poaros (12yrs) and Sophie Johnson (13yrs) in a time of 2.13.15. The Ladies Open 4x50m medley team of Clara Nutting (20yrs), Gina Heyn (29yrs), Hannah Rogers (20yrs) and Zoe Bozzard-Hill (17yrs) were triumphant in a time of 2.00.19 And the Ladies Open 6x50m freestyle team dominated from the start to the final touch. They were Zoe Bozzard-Hil, Clara Nutting, Hannah Rogers, Natalie Redmayne (18yrs), Elin Jonsson (14yrs) and Gina Heyn.

Six swimmers were runners up in their events: Alice Patterson (13yrs) G13& U 100m breaststroke (1 min 22.84), Anna Smail (11yrs) G10-11yr 50m butterfly (34.18), Toby Tolson (13) B13&U 100m backstroke (1.09.37), Gina Heyn Ladies Open 100m breaststroke (1.13.47), Sophie Fussell (11yrs) G15&U 100m breaststroke (1 min 19.99) and Hannah Rogers in the Ladies open 100m freestyle (57.86).

Swimmers grabbing a third spot were thirteen year old Alice Smail in the G13&U 100m backstroke (1.13.47) and 100m butterfly (1.09.57). Toby Tolson (13yrs) in the B13&U 100m butterfly (1.09.63). Jacob Patterson (11yrs) in the boys 10-11yrs 50m backstroke (36.54). And the boys’ 9-11yr 4x50m freestyle and 4x50m medley relay teams of Jacob Patterson, Matthew Hall, Eddie Hunt and Max Johnson with times of 2.09.67 and 2.33.15 respectively.

Teddington Head Coach Ed Sinclair said 'A huge well done to all who took part in the Arena League 2013. It was an historic result for our club and we should all feel very proud of this achievement'.
