Enfield Swim Squad B-Team Continues to Improve

Expectations were high as our team travelled to Borehamwood to compete in the 3rd round of the National Arena League at the Venue Pool. Seeded in only 6th place and competing in lane 7, coaches Rob and Gemma were confident that our swimmers could better their ranked position. The chilly conditions did not deter our team and spirits were high as the gala got off to a solid start in the 200IM and first round of relays, with a number of our teams' improving on their positions from the first two rounds.
Returning from a long spell of illness, Jen Budden joined Jessica Prior, Sara Khadraoui and Hannah Merry to strengthen the ladies open medley relay team and claim our first win of the night. After the first 10 races, Harrow 'A', new to the league this year, were forging ahead with ESS 'B' looking strong in 4th position, just behind Harlow and Southwark Aquatics.

In the individual events, our swimmers fought hard for every place and once again a number of personal best times were set. First places were secured by Alice Comerford (girls U12 50m Breaststroke), Grace Lennon (girls U12 50m Freestyle) and Ryan McCarthy (Open 100m backstroke). Aigboje Dudu-Orumen made a determined surge to the finish to take 2nd place in the U12 50m breaststroke, with Jessica Prior (Open 100m back), Ross McCarthy (U16 100m back) and Sarah Khadraoui (U16 100m breaststroke) also achieving 2nd places and adding valuable points to the ESS tally.
Chloe Welch was once again in great form taking 3rd place in both the U14 100m back and freestyle. Further 3rd places were secured by Joe Haimes who smashed his 100m freestyle PB, Lily Tiernan (U12 50m butterfly), Tom Newman (U16 100m breaststroke), Ryan McCarthy (200IM) and Jade Mehmet-Ali (U16 100m freestyle). Leanne Potter narrowly missed out on a top 3 place in the under 16 100m fly, knocking an impressive 2 seconds off her PB.

Going into the final round of relays, ESS had moved up to 2nd position overall and the excitement was evident both in the gallery and amongst the team. First off was the girls U12 medley relay team of Megan Molloy, Nora Khadraoui, Lily Tiernan and Grace Lennon who got us off to a fantastic start with a convincing 1st place. This was followed shortly by another 1st place from the girls U14 team of Alice Monteforte, Chloe Welch, Emily Whale and Yasemin Baytas. Chloe then went on to join Jade Mehmet-Ali, Hannah Merry, Caroline Dunnett, Jessica Prior and Jen Budden to claim victory in the ladies open 6 x 50m freestyle relay. In the final event of the evening, the men's open 6 x 50m relay, our team surged through the field to finish in 2nd spot and helping the team to secure 2nd place overall in the gala.

Unfortunately, once the points from all three galas were added up, we dropped to 3rd place in Division 3 so will not move up to Division 2 this season. However, we look forward to next year's Arena League when we hope to improve on this year's result and move up to Division 2. Well done to the coaches, team managers and all the swimmers, thanks to the parents for their support through all three rounds and to the officials and organisers of the League.
