Arena Signs Contract with Roberto Pavoni

Arena has announced that it has signed a sponsorship deal with English butterfly and IM swimmer, Roberto Pavoni. The 22-year-old Olympian and World Championship semi-finalist joins team arena on the heels of the three-diamond partnership announcement with Team England for this year’s Commonwealth Games.

Born in Harold Wood, London, Pavoni’s Italian name derives from his father’s Roman origins. He started swimming lessons as a six-year-old, learning to swim at the Brentwood Swimming Club in Essex, and later spent two years working under coach Chris Nesbit at British Swimming’s Offshore Centre on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Having made his debut at the British Championships when he was 15, Pavoni earned his first major competition medals in 2008 at the European Junior Championships in Belgrade, winning 400 IM gold, 200 fly silver, and 200 IM bronze. He repeated his 400 IM victory a year later in Prague, and in 2010 qualified for the Commonwealth Games when he won his first British 400 IM title, which he has held on to ever since. In Delhi he made the 400 IM and 200 butterfly finals, and the 200 IM semi-finals.

2011 saw Pavoni making his first World Championship appearance in Rome, where he progressed to the final of the 400 IM. A year later he realized one of his dreams by swimming in front of his home crowd at the London Olympics, where he failed to advance beyond the heats in 400 IM and 200 butterfly. In 2013 he made his second World Championship appearance, this time in Barcelona, where he made the semi-finals of both 200 fly and 200 IM, and failed by less than 0,1s to make the 400 IM finals.

Pavoni now trains with coach James Renwick at ITC Loughborough, and is expected to make Team England in his favourite events for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, as well as the Great Britain team for the European Championships in Berlin.

“We are really pleased to have signed Roberto,” said Debbie Poulson, General Manager of Solo Sports, arena’s distributor in the UK. “He’s a great young talent and has been knocking on the podium door at the big international events for a while now, and we believe he can take it to the next level in Glasgow and beyond. Given that arena will be Team England’s technical sponsor at the Commonwealth Games, we’ll be close to the squad at all times, and will be able to give Roberto all the support he needs. With Team England and now Roberto having joined the arena family – along with Fran Halsall, who has been on the Elite Team for several years – we feel really excited about the three diamond future in the United Kingdom.”

“This is really exciting for me,” said Roberto. “Being supported by the world’s leading swimwear company gives me a  real boost going into a European Champs and Commonwealth Games year, and  it is great to be selected by arena. I will certainly be doing everything I can to excel in the pool, and to represent and promote the arena brand outside of it.”
